Walking into the Nueces County Courthouse this week, people will see wreaths decorated to reflect agencies in the area serving crime victims.

Nueces County's events for National Crime Victims' Rights Week started at the Nueces County Courthouse on Monday with a presentation of wreaths from various agencies that serve crime victims.

A handful of people, wearing shirts of loved ones they'd lost, were in attendance.

It's just one of several events throughout the week to educate the public on the services available to crime victims.

"We want you to know that our office, number one, cares," said District Attorney Mark Gonzalez. "We are here because we care about our community and we care about the public and we care about our victims. We're going to try hard to hold those accountable when that needs to be.

"But we want you to know that there are tons of services that our office can provide, and not just our office. We'll get you in touch with the right agencies... but we are here, we'll continue to be here."

Sylvia Gonzalez, the mother of 17-year-old Clarryssa Silguero who was killed in a drive-by shooting, was in attendance.

"In the beginning before I came to the ceremony, I had closed myself to think I was the only one that was going through this, and what made me stronger was when I came for the first time and I saw that I was not the only one going through this pain," Gonzalez said, standing in front of a red wreath from the Homicide Survivors Support Group that displayed photos of homicide victims.

Her daughter's killer, Heriberto Saenz, was convicted in 2010 but the case was overturned. He was convicted again in November 2016.

Gonzalez began going to the ceremonies in 2012.
